Where It Began
I'd been wanting to do something more with this dragon character I created for my 2022, animated short, 'Run Away!'.
I saw this AI based background art of a house by Australian artist, Garry Pye, that he was selling with one of his original characters (an old man in his 'Bonker' character series) and loved it. (Image with my characters pictured).
It inspired me to put my TET Avatar on the veranda with his pets. Then I thought, usually pets aren't often allowed in rental properties... what about dragons? That's how Resident Dragon came into existence.
My TET avatar I'd designed many years earlier, and had been using it in animations, and as part of my marketing for my Lazy Animator courses.
Grrr Dog and Cool Froyd the Cat were both doodles I drew in my art journal way back in 1994, and subsequently turned both into acrylic paintings on canvas in the early 2000s.
The intention was to turn this grouping of characters into a six episode, animated web series called 'Resident Dragon'. I even storyboarded two episodes.
Midway through 2024 I got the urge to really start drawing again through daily morning sketches. I tired pretty quickly of randomly coming up with things to sketch so I started learning how to draw these characters from every angle.
Then I started drawing a daily gag, and here we are.
